This archaeological set has been considered the center of pilgrimages where the Mayan worshiped the Goddess “Ixchel”. Besides being a Mayan sacred center it was a strategic site for commerce and the politic development of the area.

cozumel island!

Cozumel is one of the largest and most populated islands in Mexico (500 km2), a Caribbean paradise off the coast of the State of Quintana Roo, on the fringes of the Riviera Maya. The tourist interest it arouses and the continuous influx of cruise ships make it one of the most visited, due to the well-deserved fame of its paradisiacal condition.

Its reef is one of the most famous in the world (and extensive with more than 30 km), especially promoted by the oceanographer Jean Jacques Cousteau, who recorded a documentary on underwater life in 1961. A Mayan settlement related to god worship rites, the island of Cozumel was sighted by Juan de Grijalva in 1518, but was not continuously inhabited for centuries. Corsairs like Jean Laffite used it as a point of refuge, or as a docking point in the trade to Europe.

In less than a day you can cover the 47 km long and approximately 15 km wide of the island of Cozumel. Its flat terrain and practically linear road make it easy to travel. It is also ideal to make some stops and enjoy its beaches.
